In many circumstances, the best agricultural growing conditions include mineral-rich and moist soil. If this concept was true with grapes, wineries in the northern part of Sardegna would have a large problem! Sardegnian viticulture relies on its calcareous soil and granite land (often accompanied by a sandy top soil) to produce its grapes. It is this extremely poor soil that provides excellent drainage and tames even the most aggressive vines.
This is especially true in the case of Vermentino di Sardegna. Vermentino is a grape that has a tendency to be on the larger side and fill up with water. Because of this, it needs a climate that is hot and dry, along with good drainage and ventilation.
