My girlfriend and I were out at a local (Chicago) restaurant and the description of the 2008 vintage of this wine caught my eye. Taking a chance, we ordered a bottle and found ourselves fighting for the last drop in the bottle. This is truly a beautiful wine.
Earthy and spicy (touches of nutmeg and/or cinnamon) balanced with just enough fruit, robust but not obnoxiously overbearing. It went well with our Italian meal, cheese and red meat. The restaurant manager admitted that the Piancastelli was difficult to find. This is the wine that led me to discover Etoneca Vino Nostro, one of the few if not the only consumer suppliers for this wine.
I promptly ordered two bottles and was going to order another 6 bottles for my April birthday but they have just recently sold out this vintage. Hoping very much that they pick up the 2008 as well. I'm just glad Enoteca Vino Nostro has been able to provide a few other new favorites that can tie me over!
