The cultivation of the vine has, in this region, ancient roots that go back about two thousand years ago. Here the production of wine is mainly suited to whites. The Friuli Venezia Giulia produces excellent white wines with both international "grapes" and, especially, with local grapes. Among white grapes we find the famous Tocai Friulano, the Istrian Malvasia, Ribolla Gialla, Verduzzo Friulano, from which it produces excellent dessert wines, such as Ramandolo and the rare and excellent Picolit with which it produces an extraordinary and precious wine which bears the same name.
Among red grapes there are interesting examples such as Refosco, Schioppettino, Pignolo, Tazzelenghe and Terrano.
