Description

Run by Roberto Bianco and called a winery to watch, Cascina Morassino is one of the oldest producers of Barbaresco yet manages to slip largely under the radar. With a total of only 3.5 ha of vines in production, this wine comes from the tiny but prestigious Ovello vineyard, an area primarily owned by Gaja. It is the longer lived (and perhaps more modern) of the two cuvees produced here, having been aged in barrique and with greater density of fruit.

Lovely cherry flavors predominate with hints of chocolate and floral undertones. The tannin structure is fine but firm with the added complexity of spicy oak. Voluptuous fruit abounds in this incredible wine - bright morello cherry, plum, and red currant radiate from a background of darker fruit, with dark notes of tar and licorice as well as lifted notes of rose and spicy oak. The tannins are fine and well integrated so the wine manages to be approachable in its infancy. It is seductive and long, it will give immense pleasure at so many different stages of its life. Enjoy it with Duck, Roasted Meats, Venison.

Extraordinary focus, briary, earthy with hints of plumy fruit. Exceptionally well balanced, full of intrigue and a long finish, one of the best Barbaresco from the Langhe I've ever tried!
