This is a producer to watch.
The Amantis
winery is situated
on the south side of the Orcia
River, which separates Brunello di Montalcino from
Montecucco. Amantis’
"Birbanera"
Montecucco Rosso
packs a lot of ripe fruits, seductive spice aromas and flavors into a delicious
bottle. Primarily Sangiovese, the
blend is enhanced with a little Merlot, Canaiolo from Le Bribe vineyard, and Petit Verdot, which bring body and lush fruit to
complement Sangiovese's
energy and high tone. The wine is fermented in stainless steel, then aged a few
months in 2nd and 3rd passage French barriques. The result is a wine full of rich
fruit, soft and supple on the palate, with excellent acidity to balance it out.
A full bodied wine that is balanced and silky, Birbanera offers plenty of blueberry aromas, with
hints of vanilla, featuring fine tannins and a lightly jammy
finish. In Montalcino, it
is said that Paolo Vagaggini, Bernadetta’s
husband, knows Sangiovese like
no one else! The producer of some of the most notorious Brunellos of
Tuscany, Vagaggini
prides himself on his natural approach to wine making. "I try to bring out
the maximum potential of the terroir and the grape with our wine making
philosophy, as well as the distinct character of the owner" says Vagaggini.
