This is a producer to watch. Bernardetta Tacconi’s winery, called Amantis, is situated on the south side of the Orcia River in Southern Tuscany; the Orcia is the southern boundary of Brunello di Montalcino. The 1990s saw an incredible land boom in this region, which is called Montecucco. Folks were hoping it could be the next Brunello, with vineyards at decidedly lower prices. Amantis' "Birbanera" Montecucco Rosso sure packs a lot of ripe Sangiovese and seductive spice aroma and flavors into an affordable and delicious bottle. Primarily Sangiovese the blend is enhanced with a little Merlot and Canaiolo and Petit Verdot , which bring body and lush fruit to complement Sangiovese's energy and high tone. In Montalcino it is said that Vagaggini knows Sangiovese like no one else!!
The producer of some of the most notorious Brunellos of Tuscany, Paolo Vagaggini prides himself on his natural approach to wine making. "I try to bring out the maximum potential of the terroir, the grape our wine making philosophy and the distinct character of the owner" says Vagaggini.
The wine is fermented in stainless steel and then aged for a few months in 2nd and 3rd passage French barriques. The result is a wine full of rich fruit, soft and supple on the palate but still with excellent acidity to balance it out. It is easy to drink by itself, or with grilled meats, or with grilled Italian sausage.
This full bodied wine is balanced and silky and suits to every challenge. The Birbanera offers plenty of blueberry aromas, with hints of vanilla, featuring fine tannins and a lightly jammy finish.
