This wine is made from 100% Nebbiolo Grapes that grown in an high-altitude vineyard in the Valtellina DOC. It is made using the “Appasimento” technique of drying grapes on straw mats for weeks prior to fermentation . The Ronco del Picchio’s name refers to a small wooded area behind the vineyard in the hamlet of Carteria. To produce Sforzato, the Nebbiolo grapes are picked during the first week of October, left to dry in a drying room until the first half of December after which the grapes then go through fermentation in stainless steel tanks for 20 days with maceration for 10 days, and then through malolactic fermentation and aging for 12 months in barriques. In the glass it is an intense garnet red color. The nose is opulent with aromas of figs, cherry, plum and licorice. The palate is rich with flavors of dried red fruits, tobacco, bakers chocolate and cassis along with slow creeping tannins and brisk acidity. This fantastic wine will pair great with Red Meats, Game, Smoked Salumi, Mature Cheese and Chocolate Mousse Desserts.
