The San Gervasio vineyard extends over 2.5 hectares in the commune of Teglio at 750 meters. After four years of experimentation, they decided to grow grapes that are suitable for partial drying (appassimento in Italian) in this high-altitude vineyard featuring peculiar characteristics. The resulting wine is Sforzato Ronco del Picchio, whose name refers to a small wooded area behind the vineyard in the hamlet of Carteria. To produce Sforzato, the Nebbiolo grapes selected in the vineyard are picked during the first week of October. They are left in plastic boxes and arranged in an airy room until the first half of December. The grapes then go through fermentation in stainless steel tanks for 20 days with maceration for 10 days, and then through malolactic fermentation and aging for 12 months in barriques. Rich floral nose with aromas of cassis, black berries, oak and baking spices. The palate its a very rich with port like aromas of fresh intense dark fruit, black currants bakers chocolate balanced by brisk acidity and rich creeping tannins.
This is a beautiful wine that pairs fantastically with red meats, game, and strong and mature cheese.
